2026 Suppressor Testing Series: Performance Data & Best Suppressor Benchmarks
Making a suppressor purchase is a significant decision. Unlike most other gear, you can't "try before you buy," and it is a permanent investment that you will own for life. We know how difficult it can be to choose the best suppressor based on a manufacturer spec sheet alone.
The good news? Suppressors are now more accessible than ever. With the 2026 NFA tax stamp reduction to $0, the financial barrier has been removed, but the technical choice is more complex than ever. As the largest suppressor dealer in Iowa, we are the experts. We believe in providing our customers with honest opinions based on our own range experiences and objective performance data. We put the industry's hottest suppressors to the test so you can see exactly how they performed on our host firearms before you commit to a purchase.
Our 2026 Testing Series isolates the variables that matter most to suppressed shooting: Back Pressure, Sound Signature, and Real-World Functionality. Watch our SUPPRESSOR TESTING SERIES below to see these models in action and use the data hub to find the best 5.56, 300 Blackout, or 9mm suppressor for your specific build.
Suppressor Testing Methodology
There are a significant number of variables that can affect performance—including the host rifle platform, weather conditions, and ammunition choice. Our testing is performed with the goal of showing how these suppressors perform relative to one another under identical or near-identical conditions.
The Baseline (Benchmark)
Each testing day begins by tuning the host rifle to function unsuppressed. We define "Function" as a consistent last-shot bolt hold open (LSBHO) using a magazine with a single round loaded. This represents the lowest gas setting required to fully cycle the rifle, reducing felt recoil and excess gas blowback to the shooter. This is our Benchmark.
The Suppressed Test
Once the baseline is set, the test suppressor is installed. We then re-tune the adjustable gas block to the lowest possible setting that still produces a last-shot bolt hold open. By comparing this to our Benchmark, we can measure the exact change in system pressure and bolt carrier velocity caused by the suppressor.
Sound Metrics & Decibel Reduction
To provide a complete picture of the best suppressors for sound reduction, our testing series includes decibel readings and sound analysis. This data allows for a direct comparison of the auditory signature and muzzle blast reduction of each model when fired under identical conditions on the same host platform.
Understanding the Data: Gas Settings & Back Pressure
Our Blackout Defense host rifles utilize a 40-setting adjustable gas block. Each "click" or setting represents 2.5% of the total gas flow (100% / 40 settings = 2.5%).
- Negative Number (-): Indicates an increase in back pressure. The gas setting was turned down from the benchmark to compensate for the additional back pressure.
- Positive Number (+): Indicates a decrease in back pressure. While theoretically possible, this is highly unlikely to occur with the addition of a suppressor.
Comparative Data
Use the tabs in the spreadsheet below to navigate between different calibers. Whether you are looking for the best 9mm suppressor for a PCC or the best 300 Blackout suppressor for a subsonic hunting rig, our data shows you how they stack up.
